Advertising

With the PVR’s becoming successful with the customers it could affect the advertising industry significantly. With the Sky plus box allowing viewers total control over what they watch and more importantly allowing the viewers to record and forward the programmes does not sound so appealing to the advertising world. Normally on shows like The Bill aired on ITV on Thursdays 9pm you would have a 1 hour show which would get split up into four different sections. Each section would last about 15 minute’s air time after which we switch to adverts for a few minutes. If you have a show recorded then you would not have to sit through the adverts but could simply forward them. I f the majority of people started doing this then it could kill the advertising industry. However they also realise this and have decided to make changes also as with TiVo the audience would see an icon at the bottom of the screen which intends to catch the audience eye. This then allows the audience to press the red button and it would take you to a different screen where they would get information on a car or movie trailers depending on what the theme for the advert would be.

Video on Demand

Video on demand gives the audience total control over what they want to watch when they want to watch it. All shows and films are sent via a broadband connection so all the programmes and films would be able to be viewed on the computer. There is no schedule tying the viewer down but it gives the viewer total control over what they want to watch. Different channels now offer a catch up technique on their websites making it easier to stay up to date with your favourite soaps. BBC has a BBC i-player where if you appear to have missed an episode of Eastenders because of a prior engagement you could simply go on the website and watch it in your own time.

Personal Video Recorders

Personal Video Recorders (PVR’s) record digital television straight on to computer style hard drives. Sky has used this method to grow the company and has become popular with the audience here. In America you would have the same prospect but they call it TiVo which gives the viewer much more control over what they watch and how they watch it. It has the same prospect of a VCR because you are able to record what you watch and play it back if you wanted to. Once the memory has been filled up then you would have to delete some programmes and free up some space. You are able to pause, forward and rewind what you watch making it easy viewing. One of the big features is that you are able to record your favourite programmes and watch them whenever you like. You could have it on a series link record so you don’t have to put it on record every week, it would automatically do it for you. Also you can record one programme and view another at the same time.

Television and the PC

It is believed that in the nineteen- eighties century Televisions were first used as computer monitors at home. This was seen as the only interaction between the two media fields as the years have gone by the two different technologies have grown more and more together. Today in this multimedia world that we live in converging two media outlets into one plays an important role. Today the audience is able to get excellent TV cards for the PC which enables them to watch perfect, great quality television programmes on the PC. The main advantage of PC Television Is that now you would be able to watch television programmes whilst you are surfing on the Internet or checking your e-mails.

Mobile Television

Mobile phones have also evolved over the past few years merging with other type’s media outlets. First the mobile phone was considered to make and receive calls. Now you could do a lot more and even receive video footage on your screens. Today we have various different phone company providers such as 3G who allow the user to receive pockets off information onto your mobile phone screens. In some cases you are able to download your favourite shows and watch them on your mobile phone to be viewed later on. This type of viewing is called a podcast. The more recent and successful mobile phones such as Apples new I-Phone have used this as a special feature in order to sell the product. You are able to download applications (apps) from the Apple website which allows the user to watch Sky news and footage off you tube on the mobile phone.

All mobile phones offer some sort of video service with made for mobile type of channels.

Television and the Internet

Over the last few years the internet has outgrown television and has become a more popular source of entertainment. The Internet plays an important role in everyday life and was considered at first to just be used as research purposes and to be informative. People would go on the computer to send and receive their e-mail but now you are also able to watch your favourite soap opera online on the computer. The Internet allows the user different ways of watching television programmes and is easy accessible. Today you will be able to get some free websites on which you would be able to stream programmes. Depending on how good your Internet connection is you sometimes will get a great picture just like you are watching it on television or sometimes the picture quality could be not as good as it would appear to buffer. Today you are able to buy a TV with a built in Internet connection as Sony and Panasonic are already doing this.

Internet Downloading/Speed

Internet download is an important part of everyday life now. More and more people are watching television programmes online now which requires an internet connection. Also many of them people have resorted to downloading the programmes of various different websites and streaming them online. In order to do this you need to have a fast internet connection which would allow you to download in a fast time. The UK’s Internet download speed is too slow compared to around the world. Japan leads the way because 40% of Japanese network is fibre and we in the UK do not have any. In the UK we get about 4Mbit/s which is too slow. Broadband in this country is still delivered through copper wire.
